Our client, AquaBounty Technologies, has modified and patented the gene-based modifications that enable farmed salmon to eat year-round and grow twice as fast. AquaBounty’s patented technology will enable salmon producers to grow the same salmon they have been farming for years more quickly, driving profitability and capitalizing on the growing demand for fish – all while decreasing the strain on wild salmon populations. This growth will enable fisheries to increase profitability and bring salmon to market in 18 months versus the traditional 30 months.

AquaBounty’s patent involves the removal and splicing of a gene from Chinook salmon with DNA from an eel-like creature called an ocean pout. The process was named by Time® in partnership with CNN® as one of the 50 best inventions of 2010.
